Snack Attack? Think Fruits and Veggies!

We all know how wonderful snacking is – it fills your mid-afternoon cravings, stabilizes your blood sugars, and helps avoid binge snacking once you get home. But instead of that vending machine chocolate bar or high calorie flavoured latte, why not opt for some healthier Half Your Plate inspired snacks? Snacking on fruits and veggies is the fastest way to up your daily intake – and it’s easy! Today we’ve got some great “hacks” to help you make a healthier choice when grabbing that morning or afternoon snack.

Peanut butter is a great source of protein and goes with just about anything. Slice up some bananas, celery, apples or pears and dip into 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter for a quick and easy afternoon snack.

Carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes or green peppers are also great for dipping into hummus! Check out this easy avocado hummus recipe to add even more veggies to your snack!

Popcorn balls with dried fruit and nuts are choc-full of protein and tasty too! Try these mango popcorn balls for a fridge free snack that’ll hit the spot. You can also try them with any of your favorite dried no sugar added fruits.

Protein wraps are easy to transport, and when you use veggies the don’t even get soggy! Slice cucumbers thinly, add a slice of low fat cheese and turkey and roll up for a healthy snack on the go that stays tasty all day. You can also use a whole wheat tortilla, spread with peanut butter and wrap around a banana for a sweeter treat.

Don’t forget cottage cheese! It goes really well with berries, pineapple and many other fruits! You can even mix it with radishes and a bit of salt for a snack with some spice.
